A Reputation Built Over Generations

Award-winning food, loyal customers and a commitment to getting things right

For more than 140 years, McCartney’s of Moira has been building a reputation for quality.

Today, the business is run by sixth-generation sisters Judith and Sarah (née McCartney), continuing a family tradition that has made McCartney’s one of Northern Ireland’s most respected food retailers.

The business is renowned for its award-winning produce, including the handmade corned beef that was named Supreme Champion at the Great Taste Awards in 2011.

Yet perhaps the greatest endorsement comes from the customers who return week after week.  Some have been shopping with McCartney’s for decades, motivated by products they trust and enjoy, advice they value and a level of quality that has remained reassuringly consistent over the years.

Judith and Sarah are among the first to say that their customers’ loyalty is never taken for granted.

Every day brings new expectations, new challenges and new opportunities to improve.  Food retailers face increasing demands around product information, allergen management and operational efficiency, while customers quite rightly expect the same attention to detail they have always received.

So, the challenge is not to change what makes McCartney’s special.

It is to protect it, strengthen it and ensure the business continues to deliver the quality customers have come to expect, for generations to come.

Preparing for the Next Chapter

Supporting a growing business without losing sight of what matters most

Like many long-established businesses, McCartney’s had reached a point where the systems behind the scenes were no longer evolving at the same pace as the business itself.

Development of the existing platform had slowed, new functionality was becoming increasingly difficult to access, and routine tasks often required workarounds that added unnecessary complexity and took time that operators simply did not have during a busy day.

That was becoming particularly noticeable in areas such as product maintenance, food information and day-to-day administration tasks like labelling.

The issue wasn’t simply efficiency; it was confidence:

  • Confidence that the information being presented to customers was accurate.
  • Confidence that the business could continue adapting to changing requirements and food legislation demands.
  • Confidence that the systems and people supporting the business would be fit for the future.

The owners also wanted greater freedom in how they operated.  Being restricted to a single payment provider limited choice and flexibility on transaction processing rates, while the wider platform offered little scope for future development.

The business needed technology that would support its ambitions rather than constrain them.

A Platform Built Around Quality

Modern retail technology supporting traditional values

EPOS Cubed implemented Storefront™, delivering a modern cloud-based platform across the business.

The project included:

  • Four checkout tills.
  • Integrated Avery Berkel weighing scales.
  • PAX payment terminals across every checkout
  • Gift card functionality.
  • Enhanced product management.
  • Improved reporting and operational visibility
  • A platform ready to support recipe, ingredient and allergen management.

Crucially, McCartney’s was able to retain the weighing equipment the team already knew and trusted, while introducing greater flexibility in other areas of the operation.

The result is a platform designed to support the business today while providing a reliable foundation for future growth.

FOOD INFORMATION

Supporting Accuracy at Each Stage

Food retail is becoming increasingly complex.

Ingredients, allergens and product information all need to be maintained accurately and consistently.

Storefront™ provides McCartney’s with a stronger framework for managing that information, helping reduce manual workarounds and making updates easier to maintain over time.

That means greater confidence for the team and clearer information for customers.

More Freedom, More Choice

One of the key benefits of the move was the freedom to work with the payment provider that best suited the business.

The introduction of Worldpay/PAX terminals brought a faster, more modern payment experience while removing the limitations of being tied to a single option.

People With Shared Values

Choosing a new EPOS provider was never just about functionality.  They wanted to work with people they knew, trusted and felt confident would be there.

That helped make the switch straightforward and has provided reassurance that the business now has the right kind of support.

What This Means for Specialist Food Retailers

Reflections for butchers, delis and food retailers considering change

  1. Quality extends beyond the product:
Customers judge the entire experience, not just what they buy.  The systems behind the counter need to support the same standards of quality, accuracy and professionalism that customers experience in-store.
  2. Accurate information builds trust:
Ingredients, allergens and product information are becoming increasingly important in food retail.  Having reliable processes and systems in place helps protect both customers and the business’s reputation.
  3. Flexibility creates options:
Retailers should be free to choose the partners and providers that best suit their needs.  Modern retail platforms should enable choice, not restrict it.
  4. Technology should support people, not distract from them: The best systems remove operational friction, reduce workarounds and allow owners and staff to spend more time focusing on customers, products and service.
